EXPOSURE INDEX FOR CARIBOO AND KAMLOOPS
Wildfire Vulnerability of Kamloops
The Kamloops fire service region is further divided into 5 subdivisions; Kamloops, Lillooet, Merritt, Penticton and Vernon. From our final analysis, we could draw the following conclusions:
-
Kamloops Fire Zone: The southern part of the zone appeared to be less vulnerable compared to the northern tip. However, small areas near Cache Creek also had high vulnerability.
-
Lillooet Fire Zone: Mainly, the northwest and southern area near Lytton is more vulnerable compared to the rest of the fire service zone.
-
Penticton Fire Zone: Southern part of the Penticton fire zone especially near Osoyoos is highly vulnerable to wildfires compared to the rest of the region.
-
Merritt and Vernon Fire Zones: These two fire regions seemed to be relatively less vulnerable to wildfires compared to the rest of the entire Kamloops fire service region.
Wildfire Vulnerability of Cariboo
The Cariboo Fire Service Region, is further divide into three subdivisions; Quesnel, Cariboo-Chilcotin and 100 Mile House fire zones.
-
Cariboo Chilcotin Fire Zone: This zone is the largest among the fire zones of Cariboo. The Southern tips of the region seemed to have high vulnerability. Areas around Williams Lake had the least vulnerability to wildfire, this is partly attributable to the presence of higher densities of population and infrastructure which coincided with lesser presence of fuel. Additionally, the Northeastern part presented higher vulnerability.
-
Quesnel Fire Zone: The largest areas of the Quesnel fire zone appear to be at medium to low levels of vulnerability. The regions with the highest levels of vulnerability are in the northeastern section, overlapping with a highly vulnerable section from the Cariboo-Chilcotin fire zone.
-
100 Mile House Fire Zone: This zone appeared to have the greatest area with the lowest vulnerability score.
